Almost two years ago, UMRA received a grant from the WV Humanities Council to design and place ten plaques around Edith Barill Riverfront Park describing the history of Star City. Matching funds were provided by Morgantown North Rotary, the River Town Program, and the Town of Star City. The research and design team included: Project Director Nathan Wuertenberg, Plaque Designer Jake Vargas, and team members Frank Jernejcic, Vaike Haas, Dave Smaldone and Mary Wimmer. The plaques were fabricated by Alan Laick at Laick Design, Fairchance, PA (the person who designed and printed our Upper Mon River Water Trail maps).
Great progress has been made over the last year (despite COVID!), and the final phase of the project will take place this coming week, on schedule. Yesterday, volunteers from Morgantown North Rotary Club cemented in the ten posts that will support the plaques (see their website for a photo album of this work). Next week, the mounts and plaques will be attached. The final event, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, will take place next Saturday, June 26th at 11:00 a.m. at Edith Barill Riverfront Park. Mayor Herman Reid and our Project Director will be two of the speakers. See attached flier and press release, and feel free to circulate far and wide!
These informative plaques provide a fine contribution toward the revitalization of the Star City Riverfront Park, consistent with UMRA’s mission/goals.
