During an October 2023 meeting of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Authority Transportation Group, Vincent DeCarlo of the US Army Corps of Engineers said that the Pittsburgh District is installing remote operation capabilities on the new lock at Charleroi, on the Monongahela, and adding them to the Braddock Lock. These two will linked so that an operator at either lock will be able to control the other and reducing staffing requirements. They are now also being added to the Montgomery and capabilities will be added to other on the Ohio locks in the near future. These first additions are being made during major construction projects.According to DeCarlo, significant remote operation capabilities will be in place in the Pittsburgh District by the 2030s.Corps websites and official releases imply that this work is still in the planning and study phases.
