In the late 1890’s a group of Uniontown, PA boys spent 2 weeks each summer at a camp they called “Wonk-tond-i” opposite Quarry Run from Camp Eden on Cheat River. Arrangements were made for them to have their dinners at the Mont Chateau Hotel. One of these boys was George C. Marshall, who often returned to vacation on the Cheat. In later life he became the US Army Chief of Staff during World War II, Secretary of State and Defense in the Truman Administration and was the architect of the Marshall Plan for the economic recovery of post-war Europe for which he was awarded the 1953 Nobel Peace Prize.
